出版社のウォルターズ・クルワーは、BMJ Open誌に掲載されたRogersらによる2019年のスコーピングレビュー「中国における臓器移植に関する査読付き論文におけるドナー源の報告および倫理審査における倫理基準の遵守：スコーピングレビュー」で指摘された潜在的な倫理違反が確認されたことを受け、学術誌『Liver Transplantation』、『Hepatology』、および『Transplantation』に掲載された中国の移植研究に関する論文9本を撤回した。
このスコーピング・レビューは、中国の臓器移植レシピエントに関する研究を報告した445編の中国論文が、死刑囚の組織を用いた研究の公表を禁止するという国際的な専門的・倫理的基準に準拠していないと結論付けた。同レビューは、個々の論文の調査が完了するまで、これらの文献の撤回を求めた。
ETACがウォルターズ・クルワー社に送付した書簡において、我々は、WHO、世界医師会、移植学会、アムネスティ・インターナショナル、および『イスタンブール宣言』管理グループを含む国際機関が、移植における死刑囚の臓器の使用を広く非難していること、また、Rogersらによるスコーピング・レビューで指摘された論文 (2019)によるスコーピングレビューで指摘された論文は、死刑執行された囚人から得られた臓器やデータを用いた研究を報告しており、この国際的な倫理指針に違反していると指摘しました。これを受け、学術記録の完全性を守るため、著者との直接のやり取りを含む、COPE（出版倫理委員会）のガイドラインに基づく調査が実施されました。その結果、特定された論文は撤回されました。
現在までに、このスコーピングレビューを受けて、様々な出版社により60編の論文が撤回されている。ETACは、これらの撤回措置および移植研究の倫理基準を維持するという各学術誌の取り組みを称賛するとともに、残りの論文についても撤回されるよう強く要請する。
